Town Of Guilford College To Be Extended A bill before the North Carolina State Legislature to re-establish and extend the corporate limits of the Town of Guilford College has passed the House of Representa tives and is now before the Sen ate. The bill would extend the town limits to include all of the prop erty of the college, and that porp erty adjacent to the north right of-way on Friendly Road as far as the J. R. Coltrane property. This bill would also name President Milner as Mayor of the Town, and Dena Ljung, Dr. Newlin, and Mr. Parsons as Town Commissioners. The Town was originally estab lished in 1895, primarily because of a state law which required all able-bodied men living along a road to work on the roads when needed. The result of this was that the boys from the college spent a good part of their time on the roads. Towns could substitute equipment for labor of its citizens, and so the college became a town. The original document gave the boundaries as a rectangle 2000 feet square, with Founders Hall as the center. The new bill will also provide for a general election to be held in May. Only legal residents of the Town of Guilford College will be eligible to vote in this election.
